Gretzky on Lacrosse:
It is
interesting to note what hockey great Wayne Gretzky wrote in his
National Post
column in March, 2000:
"If sport
has a high point of the year, it must be the first week of spring. When I was
growing up, I used to love this time of year. It was when I put my hockey
equipment away and I was absolutely ecstatic to see the end of the hockey
season. One of the worst things to happen to the game, in my opinion, has been
year-round hockey and, in particular, summer hockey. All it does for kids, as
far as I can tell, is keep them out of sports they should be doing in the warmer
weather. I could hardly wait to get my lacrosse stick out and start throwing
the ball against the walls and working on our moves as we played the lacrosse
equivalent to road hockey. All the good hockey players seemed to play lacrosse
in those days and every one of them learned something from the game to carry
over to the other - things athletes can only learn by mixing up the games they
play when they are young."

2010 Hawks Nest:
Fort Erie Midget Lacrosse Team impresses other
teams at Arthur Tournament
The Midget squad impressed the Arthur tournament
officials and other teams at the Arthur Midget Tournament. The team played with
only six players (no substitutes) and gained a lot of admiration from their
coaching staff, their parents and the other teams in the tournament. There were
larger crowds watching the Fort Erie team as word got around that they were
playing with no subs.
The players were Raven Martin (Goalie), Evan
Ashey, Mackenzie Core, Kyle Ashey, Chelsey Jackson and Dan Blocho. Three are
under-aged players. Evan is a Major Bantam and Mackenzie & Chelsey are Minor
Bantams.
The first game was against Kawartha Lakes resulted
in a 7-0 loss. Fort Erie allowed only 1 goal in the first period and 3 goals
each in the other two periods. They actually out-shot Kawartha Lakes in the
first period but could not get it in the net.
The second game was against North Perth resulted
in a 7-1 loss. The score in the first period was 2-1 for North Perth. Dan Blocho
scored from a pass from Mackenzie Core. Fort Erie allowed 3 goals in the second
period and only two goals in third period. Raven Martin played excellent goal in
the first period keeping the game within reach.
This team should be proud of itself by showing a
lot of heart and determination.
