Butch General Memorial Tournament
About The Tournament
About Butch General
The Butch General Memorial Tournament proudly honours the legacy of Charles "Butch" General, a devoted leader, mentor, and champion of lacrosse in the community of Fort Erie.
Raised on the Six Nations Reserve, Butch did not begin playing lacrosse until his teenage years while living in Buffalo. What began as a late introduction to Canada’s national summer sport grew into a lifelong passion. Like many young players, he started in the Indian Athletic Association at age 15, competing in inter-reservation leagues before eventually transitioning into coaching — the role that would define his legacy.
When Butch moved to Fort Erie in 1983, the town did not yet have an organized lacrosse league. While working as a bridge inspector for the New York State Thruway and raising his two sons, Chris and Dan, he remained committed to the game. In 1993, alongside his wife Cathy and fellow community members, he helped bring organized lacrosse back to town by establishing the Fort Erie Minor Lacrosse Association.
Butch began coaching as an assistant for his younger son’s team and continued advancing through the age divisions as his players progressed. Over the years, his leadership helped shape countless young athletes. Many of the players he coached in their formative seasons went on to compete at higher levels, including provincial championships and senior leagues.
His impact was felt across the province. Recognized as one of the top coaches within the Ontario Lacrosse Association, Butch led his intermediate team to a provincial championship in 1998 and followed it with a second-place finish the next year — earning Coach of the Year honours in 1999.
Despite the accolades, Butch remained humble. He credited the support of his wife, the executive team, and the broader lacrosse community for their shared success. Even after stepping away from the bench, he continued to serve the association as Coaching Convenor, ensuring future generations would benefit from strong mentorship and leadership.
In recognition of his dedication, Fort Erie Town Council honoured Butch for his years of service to youth and sport in the community. Then-Mayor Wayne Redekop described him as a dedicated and fair supporter of youth, whose contributions were deeply appreciated by players, parents, and community leaders alike.
Butch General’s legacy is not measured solely in banners or awards, but in the generations of athletes he inspired and the foundation he helped build. The Butch General Memorial Tournament stands as a tribute to his commitment to honoring legacy and growing the game — values that continue to guide Fort Erie lacrosse today.
